This 2 megawatt Cummins ONAN generator was sold for use by a large mortgage company based in the Dallas – Fort Worth area. Because of the remote location on the property where the generator was to be installed, and the need to reduce sound levels near the genset, it was placed in a secure enclosure (big steel box). Here you can see the enclosure – which contains the generator – being lowered into place on its new concrete pad. When fully installed, this generator will provide back-up power for two large data centers in the building nearby.

These two views show the lifting of an 8-fan Liebert Drycooler from the roof of a large building in downtown Shreveport. The removal of these Liebert Drycoolers was part of a deinstallation project for the building owner who was having a former telcom switch room removed from his premises. As you can see, the clearance in the alley in which we had to stage flatbed trucks to land the drycoolers was extremely narrow. With a skilled crew and careful work, we were able to land both large drycoolers without a scratch – either to the equipment or to the nearby buildings.

Awhile back we showed a photo of a Liebert Air Conditioner with a birds nest on top of the compressor. That photo gave us a big chuckle. Here is another which just arrived. This fellow wants to sell us several Liebert AC units. Once we looked at his photos, we determined we were not interested, but thought you might find this picture amusing.
As you can no doubt tell, this unit is from a very cold place – since there is SNOW INSIDE THE UNIT on the control panel. Lieberts are great air conditioners, but as far as we know, they cannot be used as snow making machines.

These two images show a Liebert FH740 Deluxe System III Air Conditioner. This unit is one of 88 we deinstalled from a former Data Center in the San Francisco Bay area. As you can see, there are no condensers in this unit. In the photo of the unit without “skins” (outer panels), you can see copper piping at the end of the coil – on the end of the Air Conditioner nearest the camera. This particular unit was configured to use glycol and water as a coolant.

This photo shows six Liebert Air Conditioners loaded onto a trailer for delivery. As you can see, there are three units along each wall of the trailer. The units have been strapped to the walls – to keep them from shifting during transport. Before the door is closed on the trailer, our shipping crew will also toe-nail 2×4 boards at the edge of each pallet. With these boards nailed to the trailer floor, the units will be further protected against shifting during transport.

While units packed this tightly in a trailer can’t move very far, if the truck and trailer were to make a sudden stop – some of the outer panels might get dented. The straps and extra boards will help keep this from happening. Simple precautions such as these help Liebert equipment arrive at our customer’s location intact and in good condition.

What do you do when your server room Air Conditioner won’t fit? You cut it in half – of course!

This Liebert Air Conditioner was purchased by a client who wanted to install it in a small Data Center on the second floor of an Historic (very old) building. The building elevators were too small to accommodate the unit – even standing on end. We could not bring the unit up the stairs because turns inside the stair wells were too tight. So we did the next best thing – we cut the unit in half!

Actually, as these pictures show, we disassembled the unit and cut the frame in half. The pieces you see here – plus the “skins” (outside panels) – all fit easily into the building elevators. Once we had moved the parts to the second floor Data Center, we reassembled the frame – with large rivets – and replaced the components into the frame. After almost a year, the owner reports the unit is working fine and they have had no difficulties following the surgery their unit was subjected to.

While cutting frames in half is not a common practice, Liebert designed their Deluxe System III units so this could be done in extreme cases.

Here is what happens to heat rejection fins on air conditioning condensers or chillers when subjected to “salt air”. This happens to be a large York chiller on the roof of a Data Center in the San Francisco Bay area. The Data Center was located on land reclaimed from a former salt marsh – almost at the water’s edge. Views from the building’s offices were spectacular, but you can see that all effects were not so benign.
When buying server room air conditioning units, we always ask where the units are located. Whether the equipment includes Liebert Condensers or some type of chiller, it’s important for us to know what the operating environment was. That’s because salt corrosion will “kill” a condenser or chiller in a matter of a few years.

Here are photos of what a HP Data Center looked like during and after our recent deinstallation. The top photo shows our crew about to move a Liebert Air Conditioner from its position near the wall in the data center. The bottom photo gives the same (almost) view of the wall and nearby area following the deinstallation – after the raised access flooring and electrical equipment have been removed.
For this project, Liebert equipment was removed from the data center, an electrical service room one floor below the data center.

Sure Companies traveled to Houston to deinstall a small data center on the second floor of an office building. The task consisted of removing Liebert Air Conditioning Equipment and Raised Computer Flooring from the Data Center. Because it was located on the Second Floor, the material had to first be loaded onto pallets and then lifted out of a window – specially removed from the building for the day.
After paying careful attention to the weather for almost two weeks, our project managers decided a recent Saturday morning would be the best time to remove the Liebert equipment and Flooring from the building.
The pictures below show:
- the data center after the project has begun – with many of the floor tiles removed.
- forklift removing Liebert Air Conditioner from second floor.
- window at back of office building open for removal of equipment.
our crew gathering the raised computer flooring from the former data center. Once palletized this flooring was lifted out a window and down to ground level where it was loaded onto a truck to travel back to our facility in Plano.
